Describe a time you were scared.

Was the danger real or imagined? Explain how you dealt with it.

Got caught in the bite more then once while fishing for crab on the Bering Sea...in the bite mean that the rope connected to sinking pot has somehow grabbed you and is going to take you overboard. Only quick reflexes and thinking will save you.

  1. Only once can I remember being terrified during waking hours.

I was much younger than I am now, working the late shift at an ice cream parlor. Being that the place was so small, the closing worker worked by themselves. Normally not a problem.

This particular night, a homeless man came into the store seeking shelter from the steamy night. He had no money, and since I was the only one there, I gave him a dish of ice cream.

Poor guy was so tired and still had half the town to cross before he got to the homeless shelter, that I offered to pay for a taxi to get him there.

The man was very grateful. I watched for the taxi while he used the restroom. When the taxi pulled up, I opened the door to tell the driver his fare would be out in a minute.

It was all I could do not to scream. The driver looked normal...except for the eyes. I swear those eyes were.... well it was like I was looking at the incarnation of evil. Those eyes seemed to see right to the very core of my being, and nothing but pure evil seemed to radiate from them. It was instant terror... the likes of which I have never before or since felt. If there is such a thing as Satan, I've met him, and he drives a taxi.

Nothing more happened that night. The driver and his fare left without incident. But I was left horribly shaken. I called my dad and asked him to come sit with me the rest of the evening until I locked up and went home.

I still don't understand what happened that night. The homeless man was completely harmless. The cab driver did nothing wrong. But when he looked at me as I was telling him to wait just a moment... pure evil seemed to flow from his eyes and I felt such overwhelming terror. Logically speaking it makes no sense. None what so ever. It should have been just a normal thing. But somehow...it wasn't.
