Yay...we broke a record?

Name a book that changed your mind or opened your eyes.
Reading 'Tuesdays With Morrie' opened my eyes
It was about a professor and one of his student's who decided to spend time with his dying professor...What if it was your last chance at living...would all that matters lie within your heart? Who you loved and who loved you?
Watch "Smokin Aces" next time you're home sick
You sick? How about an action flick?
Recommend a movie for a friend stuck on the couch with a cold.
If I'm sick....Watching a boring movie doesn't help..gotta get my pulse up and sweat that nasty stuff out of my system
Frost lingers

Lions & Tigers & Bears oh my!
So we planned a big hike up into the mountains...all night stay up high upon the mountain...It was getting pretty chilly at night but I was prepared and so was he...or so we thought.
The fire quickly extinguished and we were left to scurry into the shelter and crawl down deep in our sleeping bags...the lightening and thunder was deafening and we both found it hard to fall asleep. It was a very exciting night for me, way up in the mountains with all hell breaking loose *FLASH* *BOOOM* I love that stuff.
About 12 A.M. one side of the shelter had crumbled and soaked my friend Alan..he didn't bring a change of clothes nor did I...yet another mistake...so we were left with a decision..to stay and freeze to death (25F. that night) or make a run for it. We must have been at least 6 miles from home..straight up a mountain and Mother Nature was throwing everything she could at us. We came to the conclusion that as soon as the rain had settled down to bolt down the mountain.
"Did you bring that flashlight?" I said to Alan. "nope...I forgot it, but I did bring a few flares to start the fire etc." "Oh mannnn, We only have about 20 minutes of light to get down this mountain..that sucks!"
But we have to do it!
while we were packing up our gear (we left some to travel light and fast)
I started talking about how bears and wolves etc...are attracted to prey running through the woods (just to pick on him some) Perhaps they are but they must be frightened by loud humans as well.
OK..time to head down the hill and get as far as we can on two flares...we had better be scootin...he was a faster runner than I so he led with me right behind...I also had him convinced that it was best to yell out as to scare the huge beasts away that possibly could make us cuisine. Down we went...him yelling at the top of his lungs anything he could think of, I joined in as well... we were shittin and gettin let me tell ya!...he tripped and we both went flying through with the end result of me smashing him into the wet earth..."let's goooo!" Off we went down the hill like two marathon runners in Boston. We got pretty far down the hill before the last flare went out. "now what?" I said....With the clouds above, it was dark...very dark...that was eerie indeed.
We could barely see in front of our faces. So we held on to each other...and with spear in hand, felt our way down the hill. We finally made it to a farmers field and after about ten minutes of trying to get our location, we realized that we were still a long way from home...we had strayed off almost parallel with his home..still another 4 miles away...we had to get home..we were both wet and very cold..we decided to find a farm and call home...We found one and it was well into morning..We woke up the people who lived there..and finally got a ride home..what a night! A night of survival and wild memories! To this day I wonder if anyone heard us off in the distance yelling at the top of our lungs while running down that mountain in the middle of the night....

The long journey that began with one step north
Hiya beachgoers I wasn't iggying my PM's...I was writing this Time to stoke the fire and tell you a story The fire flickers in a dance that mesmerizes me and sends me off into deep thought about my adventures on an Island I lived on...Dutch Harbor Alaska right after high school, many of my friends were going off to college or the military..I didn't want any part of either. So after careful thought...I decided to go to Alaska...everyone thought that was crazy idea but I didn't...I had hitch~hiked all over the Western coast for a few years..off and on during the summers.
One morning I actually left Spokane at 4 am...got to Seattle by 1 PM...partied with friends til around 8PM...I had them drop me off in North Bend which is the start of the Cascade pass in Wa. I was in my warm bed at home by 5 AM the next day. Me and a few friends hitch~hiked down to the Redwoods in California a few times as well..long before I turned 18...So I was used to going afar by any means necessary..My Friend took me me about 20 miles east to Coeur d Alene ID and left me at on on ramp to N. route 95 which I took up into Canada. Bare in mind that it was fairly early in summer to be heading north into Canada...but I was prepared completely...with all subthermal gear, survival kit etc. I had hunted and hiked for days in some of the wildest country in the nation...so Canada was kind of a scary thought. The last late fall prior...I had hitch to Pheonix and back (A whole other story I'd like to write about...some of my Seattle runs as well.)
Anyway..it was on...I had thought about turning back several times on my way....stayed with some wonderful Canadian families that were very hospitable...It got pretty cold some nights so staying the night at Canadian strangers turned out to be interesting etc..it was part of the whole journey, the experience...Banff was cool! I spent 2 days up there. Stayed in a lodge in Jasper which was pretty darn cool ( A whole other story) Finally after 8 days I ended up in Anchorage AK..where I rented a room for a week. I ended up flying back to Anchorage from Dutch Harbor quite a few times in the next three years..mostly partied at the local haunts...Gussy La mours or how ever that really was spelled...had nickel 8 oz. mason jars of beer...that's right 20 for a buck! Those were a few wild nights (another book all together) They also had a bar called the monkey wharf which had actual live monkies...and when the music started they would go ape ****e Wild I tell ya...
I answered an add to go 800 miles out in the Aluetian island chain to a little place called Dutch Harbor it was right across the bridge from Unalaska (another story). So I threw on my back pack and flew out to Dutch harbor where I was greeted with an unbelievable air strip...once we landed there was a plane on the side of the runway...smashed and burned and on it said...welcome to fantasy island...So I got a job in this cannery...working for a seafood company...butchering king - snow crab etc...worked around 16 hours a day 7 days a week for 32 days straight once up there! I was a walking zombie...So I got an offer to go on a boat as a fisherman..so I took it..the next three years I spent on the Bering Sea fishing for everything from cod to halibut to crab...made good money but I felt my luck might run out if I stayed on that hellish ocean much longer. The last day...rounding the tip of the harbor into dutch harbor..I had cleaned up and put on my best...eager to get back on dry land and yes..party as well. A pretty good sized wave came over and almost took me overboard, I stood up all wet...flip off the Sea and said "see...you didn't get me after all" The crew thought it was hilarious....So my days up in Alaska were over ..all I have left is the fond memories of the journey to there and back...I'll go back someday....not hitch hiking though... The Bering sea is calling me I think I wouldn't recommend it to anyone unless you're into the total extreme! Through time I will add more detail of everything I did and saw...my three and a half years in paradise

The last Sunday of ol man winter
It's raining pretty hard today, but it's far warmer then it has been as of late. I've seen more robins out and about, a few squirrels etc. It's a welcome sign. I really haven't had much spring fever yet but it will happen. Soon.
There's a million things I'd like to do outside when ol man winter departs
I actually have some time to chill today which is nice..it was a long week
sitting here in some warm sweats...cup of coffee in hand
life is good today!

Ghosts, soiled shorts and one mean prank
~Men can scream like women~
I convinced my room mate that there were ghosts in the house with well thought out strings-hooks-wires. He never caught on to it...for several days he was spooked. Stuff moving without any logical explanation. I'd laugh at him and he probably thought I was laughing at him because I thought he was crazy and being rediculous...then the grand finally. One day after the net on the ceiling (hey..it was a bachelor pad) had moved one too many times. He kind of lost it...So it was time. I told him to show me exactly where this phenomenon was occurring the most. As soon as he got close to the spot...the cable box exploded into the air right infront of him...he screamed like a totally horrified woman in one of those scare movies and ran across the room...smacking head long into the door jam..knocked him right on his rear end...Ouch!
"hey man, you didn't have an accident in yer pants didya?"
I think he's still mad at me over that
go figure
I'm a prankster and have a lot of stories like that if you are interested
here comes April fools...wooohoooo...watch out world

St. Patty's day and my neglected bar b que
I've got a deadline....St. Pats day
By then if I'm not bar b quing...I must be nuckin futs
Firing up the bar b que signifys to me the coming of spring and finally escaping my indoor winter habits, locked in from the outside...time to liberate myself...sun on the body...everything turning green again...trees getting back their lush foliage. With the warm weather comes the winds which I can live with. Wind chill doesn't play into the equation anymore.
I like to get a pint of my favorite whiskey and a half rack of sodas (pepsi), start the bar b que and breath in the wonderful things anew in my backyard and beyond. Play frisbee and ball with my two dogs and run them til they lay down in exhaustion. When it get's hot I run them less and leave a sprinkler going for them to run through...My boy (thai)..he loves the water..he'll snap and play in the water the whole time we're out there...go lay down, come back to it then repeat. My girl (taya) hated the water and would run around it...avoiding it comepletely...you'd think she was the witch in the wizard of oz "i'm meltingggggg". I got an idea..throw the ball she loves so much ever closer througout the summer into the h20 terror fountain. Slowly but surely she got closer and closer to the center...the event horizon for her. Grabbing her ball as fast as she can then running away from it like her rear end was on fire. After all these years she can now stand in the sprinkler's wrath with no problem. A liberated she hound, head held high. "All that and a bag o jerky treats"
Ok Ok..back to the bar b que
I like to marinate a whole chicken in one of my favorite combinations of herbs and spices. And soak some mesquite chips in water while the coals get white and ready. I love to sit by the bar b que and smell the wood smoke...that really makes me hungry. Sip some good ol sour mash, listen to tunes and just absorb everything. "A bad day of bar b que is far better then any good day at work!"
"Better check the food"...and with surgical like prowess I tend to my bar b que. I always put on extra hot dogs so while the food is bathing is mesquite goodness "I'm getting ever hungrier"
I can sample my well thought out bar b que masterpieces. For some reason...food seems to taste better outside..could be any number of reasons..like I care..I just enjoying it and letting go of a tough back breaking daily grind.
"My phone is off..I really don't want to talk to a soul right now!"
So...for a brief moment in time..I escape
And finally
I got out of the house
ate some good food
played with my dogs
and didn't give a hoot what else was goin on in the world
a brief respite from a seemingly dark place right now
A bleeding America

Christian the lion and my heart
Animals have every right to live out their lives on this planet. I no longer look at them as just animals and I care for all of them in one way or another. Sometimes I even feel that dogs are at times better than humans...I can come home...having the worst day ever...grumpy as can be...and there they are waiting...happy and loving and unconditional...very very precious and they deserve the best I can offer...I will never get rid of any pet I have had..they will live out their lives..loved and happy with me...no chain in the back yard...no outside only nonsense...so please...love your animals and treat them as you wish to be treated...the rewards will come back. And do something to help animals around the world...it's the right thing to do! We have so much to gain by loving them!

You've got PM
Today...another friend passed away from cancer and it really shook me...although I never met this person...I had got to know her rather well...it feels so strange in a way...I guess a person can get close to others via the web and when something happens to them...it hits home
And another online friend not too long ago passed away from a house fire and one about a year before that...their memory shining on within me
So...surfing the web and making friends online is one of the best things to do with idle time...although it can have it's downside
I sure do have a ton of memories of people online, that's a good thing!

Analogy of the positive
I teach martial arts and wanted to come up with an analogy to share with my students about positivety. It seems to help at times with understanding what I'm trying to get across to them.
first of all...I believe that we are all at war with the negative..it is so prevelant in every day life. Sometimes overwhelming us or controlling our personality etc. So we must basically fight it at all times and let the positivety rule our consciousness and being
Picture a lot of land next to a flowing river
The river is black with negativety
Meanwhile..I go about building my home
I must start with the foundation...brick by brick
Every time I think negative or let it control me etc
I take a brick off my foundation
Every time I think positive and do positive things
I add a brick
the whole process must be done in a positive manner or the house will never be built, let alone the foundation
This house and foundation is your life
Take a break and sit down by the river and watch all the negativety flow by
even people floating by calling out for help
"I'll throw them a rope, perhaps I can save a few"
I hope so
ok...time to get back to work on that foundation!
So now...when one of my todai's (student) does something good...I tell them "you added another brick to your foundation..Congrats!" and visa versa

A day to forget...reboot
Not in a pessimistic way...All the things that I have done up to this point is who I am as a person, the little things and the big things that shaped me. But so many times I often get caught up in a situation/moment and it could be almost unbearable...I can realize at that moment...that in a short while..this situation will be over and most likely forgotten...so don't take it so hard. It's all good!

Skating away on the thin ice of a new day (Tull)
I thought of that song on my way to work this morning...it was so slick on the roads. I suppose I could have got to work faster with ice skates on...still, I made it home alive and unscathed. A winter white wonderland in March...tonight it will get down around 0 degrees F...must drip the water since my house is a foot off the ground and I have no basement. I can freeze those pipes fairly easily. Haven't done it yet in the nine years I've lived here...that would be spendy if it ever happened.
The moon was low on the horizon this morning...full and a slight hue of amber. Breathtaking...I was going to work with the sun coming up, then daylight savings time kicked in....back to dark commutes for a awhile. The sun is rising a little earlier each day and will be back up in all it's glory in a few weeks....welcoming me to a new day...a positive day
Work was the same old grind but at least there is an infinite amount of humor and put downs. great crew to work with. All of us try to stay positive and enjoy it. Everyone works at a fast pace and at the end of the day....we got it done...right
Then it's off home to let the dogs out...maybe surf the web for a few...then teach a class of martial arts....come home and chill
repeat
I'm content with my life...it matters
